Official paper-photo dimensions

The Chinese Visa Application Service Center lists a paper photo 33 mm wide by 48 mm high. Head width should be 15–22 mm and head height 28–33 mm. The photo must be recent, colour, front-facing and set against a white or near-white background.

Digital upload is a different specification

Published digital guidance uses a JPEG between 354×472 and 420×560 pixels, RGB colour and commonly a 40–120 KB file range. This browser tool exports the paper dimensions at 300 DPI and does not automatically enforce those upload limits.

Application procedures and whether a paper photo is needed after online review can vary by location.

Composition checklist

Neutral expression, eyes open and lips closed
Full face visible and centred
No heavy, tinted or glare-producing glasses
No shadows, red eye, distortion or border
Recent photo taken within six months
