Current printed-photo rules
The Government of Canada requires two identical, unaltered photos measuring 50 mm wide by 70 mm high. Face height from chin to crown must be 31–36 mm. Photos must be taken in person by a commercial photographer or studio and professionally printed on high-quality photographic paper.

The photographer or studio must provide required information on the back, and a guarantor may also need to sign one photo. A correctly sized JPEG cannot supply those requirements.
Why include a reference crop?
It helps explain the relationship between the 50×70 mm frame and the 31–36 mm face measurement. It can also help applicants understand why a U.S. 2×2 photo is not interchangeable with a Canadian passport photo.
Paper and online routes differ
Canada now distinguishes in-person or mail applications from online renewals, which use a digital passport photo. Follow the instructions for the route you are actually using.
Before visiting a photographer
- Take the official requirements with you.
- Use a neutral expression and a recent likeness.
- Do not alter, filter or AI-edit the photo.
- Confirm the studio information and date are placed on the back.
