2x2 Passport Photo and 2x2 Photo: Size, Pixels and a Careful Crop

By Passport Photo Template Editorial Team | Published and reviewed July 3, 2026 | 7 minute read

A 2x2 photo is two inches wide by two inches high. At 300 pixels per inch, that is 600x600 pixels. The math is simple; the difficult part is keeping the head size, expression, lighting and print scale within the official instructions.

Outer size versus head size

The U.S. Department of State describes a 2x2 inch (51x51 mm) photo and a head height between 1 and 1⅜ inches (25–35 mm). A square crop can have the right outer dimensions while the face is too small or too large, so check both measurements.

What a passport photo tool can do

A browser tool can help you select a 2x2 passport photo crop, preserve the aspect ratio, create a 4x6 print layout and avoid accidental stretching. This site processes the selected image in the browser and does not claim to make an application acceptable. You remain responsible for reading the authority's source.

What the tool cannot do

Print and measure

Export the sheet at the tool's stated dimensions, select the correct paper size, disable automatic scaling and measure the cut square. If the printer shrinks a 2x2 photo to fit a margin, the file may look correct on screen but be physically wrong.
